Todai-ji Temple is a temple built by Emperor Shomu, and is the main shrine of The Kegonshu Sect.

The building with a big roof seen in the center of the photo is the Great Buddha Hall. You can see the Nara Prefectural Government building on the left hand side of the photo, but I’m surprised at the size of the Great Buddha Hall.

In the back of The Great Buddha Hall of Todai-ji Temple, you can see the five-story pagoda of Kofukuji Temple, and the far right is Nara Prefectural Government building.

The Great Buddha Hall has been burned down twice in the past, including the “Nanto-yaki-attack”. The Great Buddha, which is 15 meters high, was also affected by the fire. The current building was rebuilt in the Edo period and was restored with donations from many people.

The fire attack against Nanto(Todaiji and Kofukuji)

Taira No Kiyomori was appointed minister of dajo for the first time as a samurai with the trust of Emperor Goshirakawa. The minister of dajo is the highest position in politics. It’s a great success, isn’t it?

After that, Mr. Taira’s power increases momentum, and the autocratic side of Taira Kiyomori appears. It conflicts with Emperor Goshirakawa who appointed Mr. Taira to the minister of dajo. If he is a salaried worker, it’s a bad situation.(wry smile)

When Taira No Kiyomori got owns the Yamato country, he ignored the privileges held by the Nanto Temple and rules. It is natural that emperor Goshirakawa and the Nanto temple side strongly opposes it when becoming it so, and the movement of Mr. Anti-Taira will become active, and the confrontation was deepened.

Taira No Kiyomori tried to avenge some of the bad people (temple side) in order to silence the rebels, but the Nanto forces (such as Kofukuji Temple) showed a thorough anti-war stance.

The situation deteriorated, and they were finally a battle.
In order to wipe out the 7,000 the monks army, the Taira’s army gathered 40,000 at Narazaka and hannyaji Temple.

As the sun began to fall, the Taira’s army, which had become dominant in the war situation, and they set fire to a private house in the strong winds blew. This fire spreaded to destroy most of Todaiji temple and Kofukuji temple. It became a big disaster, and called “Nanto yakiuchi”.

It is said that the burning of Todaiji temple and Kofukuji temple was not expected by the Taira’s army.

However, Todaiji Temple, which had been revered by successive emperors, and Kofuku-ji Temple, which was Mr. Fujiwara’s temple, grew politically and economically, and Kofuku-ji temple had a military power called “monk soldier”.

The power of Todaiji temple and Kofukuji temple which was a constant nuisance for Taira No Kiyomori. Todaiji and Kofukuji was an obstacle for him.

Mr. Taira has burned down Enjo-ji temple in the past and succeeded in controling Omi area, so the theory that “I did not expect the burning of Todaiji and Kofukuji” seems to be unconvincing, but how was it?

Moreover, it was sure to have been recognized that if it was a strong wind in old times one and two towns spread the fire easily, and the day of “Nanto Yakiuchi” was December when air was dry. And there was a strong wind, so they could have expected it to spread.

Due to the fire at this time, Todaiji temple has been destroyed the Great Buddha Hall, the auditorium, the majority of the cathedral, and Kofuku-ji Temple has been destroyed the Golden Hall, the auditorium, and the Nanendo hall.

You can see Todaiji from the Kizu Yokota Line, a road running next to “Hannyaji”, so please try to expand your imagination.

Anyway, I am grateful that there are still many temples in existence.

In 1667, the building was rebuilt in 1669 and has been designated as a National Treasure.

The principal buddha is two statue of the 11-sided Kannon statue, The Ogannon, and the Kogannon, both of which are absolute secrets that no one is allowed to see. It is said that even the people who serve as the legal point of Shunie are not permitted to see.

Of the 14 days in which shunie is being held, the first seven days of the first half are the main principal buddha of The Ogannon, and for the last seven days, Kokannon will be the main principal buddha.

Why are there two main of statue ?

“Why will the main principal buddha be replaced in the first and second half of the Shunie?”

It is not clear, and it is said that it is a mysterious event because there is a part which adopts the element of esoteric ism and Shintoism, too.

There is “Todaiji Namdaemun(National Treasure)” On the way to Todaiji Temple.
On the left and right of the gate is the magnificent “Statue of Kongo Rikishi”, which was completed with Kaikei, while led by Unkei, who represented the Kamakura period.

We’re surprised that all of these are made of wood, but please pay attention to the beauty of the sculpture, such as facial expressions and muscle bones carved by calculating to look up from the bottom.

You’ll often see the Statue of Nio statue standing at the gate of the temple, but this is a guardian deity that protects against buddhist enemies from entering the temple.

The “Kongo Rikishi Statue” above is “a statue of Agyo”, with an expression that conceals the anger installed on the left.
